Doing a PhD teaches you, more than anything, how to research: what it entails, where to find trustworthy information, how to accurately assess and critique the research of others, and how to construct your own work in relationship to theirs.

And the other side of this is you come to understand how little you truly know about any research area besides the narrow one you did your dissertation on.

Yet, most people think they “researched” something and are now experts on it because they watched a random YouTube video.
